Artist's Statement
My interest in photography started high school, but was interrupted first by playing bass in various jazz and rock bands, then by the sport of mountain climbing. When I rediscovered photography in 1988, it was natural that my first subjects were the mountains and trails that I had climbed. Later I would concentrate my efforts on still lifes. Most of my work is an attempt to explore the peace and beauty so often overlooked in today's hectic world.
I work in a variety of styles and techniques, creating still lifes, cityscapes, pinhole landscapes, and photograms. I print my images in silver gelatin, platinum, palladium, cyanotype, and gum bichromate. My intention is to let the subject, and my reactions to it, dictate my style and technique.
After attending a few college classes in photography and darkroom technique, I purchased an antique field camera. The large format camera's slow deliberate style of work suited my choice of subjects, and my feelings for them. The vast majority of my work is still done with either a 4x5, 8x10, or 11x14 inch field camera. Many of my cameras and lenses are older than I am.
I was born in 1957 at Kalamazoo, Michigan, and raised in the Detroit area. I moved to Los Angeles in 1976 to pursue a career in the recording studio industry. In 1994 I left the music industry to become a full time artist and photographer. I am currently living in Simi Valley, California with my wife, Karen.
