Matting and Mounting Photographic Prints

Three Methods:
A) Spray mounting (inexpensive, little gear needed, not archival).
B) Corner mounting (inexpensive, moderate gear needed, archival).
C) Dry mounting (expensive, lots of gear needed, archival).

SPRAY MOUNTING:
Step 1) Trim print (if desired) using a razor or exacto knife and a straight edge.
Step 2) Measure both the trimmed print and mat board, write both of these numbers down. Use a ruler that is accurate to 1/16th of an inch.
Step 3) Decide if board is to be horizontal or vertical.
Step 4) Determine "top spacing"
A) Subtract the height of your print from height of your board.
B) Divide the number from "step 4A" (above) by 2. If this number contains fractions of 32nds, round to                    the next smaller 16th.
C) Lay a ruler or T-square on the top of your board and near the center. Make a small straight line about                   1/4 inch long at the measurement from "step 4B" (above).
Step 5) Determine "side spacing"
A) Subtract the width of your print from width of your board
B) Divide the number from "step 5A" (above) by 2. Next add 1/16th inch (forgiveness space) to this                    number. If this final number contains fractions of 32nds, round to the next larger 16th.
C) Lay a t-square on the side of your board and move it until it corresponds to the straight line you made                    in step 4C. Next, measure the final distance from "Step 5B" from each side and make a small dot.
Step 6) Place newspapers down over your work area.
Step 7) Place your trimmed print face down on the newspapers and spray the back of your print (I use 3M Photo              Mount) from top to bottom. Use the spray lightly, you do not want a "wet" print. Let print dry for 30              seconds.
Step 8) Spray the back of your print a second time, but this time from left to right. Let print dry for 60 seconds.
Step 9) Lift your print and VERY CAREFULLY place the two top corners of your print over (and              COMPLETELY COVERING) the two "dots" you made in "step 5C".
Step 10) Slowly lower the print onto the board. Allow the top of the print to touch the board first, then the middle,                and finally the bottom.
Step 11) Press the firmly print onto the board. This can be done with your hand or a brayer.

SPRAY MOUNT EXAMPLE

TOP SPACING:
A) Subtract the height of print (7 inches) the from height of board (11 inches):
11 - 7 = 4
B) Divide this number by 2:
4 / 2 = 2
C) Mark top space with a small straight line.

SIDE SPACING:
A) Subtract the width of print (9 inches) the from width of board (14 inches):
14 - 9 = 5
B) Divide this number by 2, then add 1/16th inch:
5 / 2 = 2 1/2 + 1/16 = 2 9/16
C) Mark both side spaces with a small dot.
